First off, coaches. Busses (if you book at least 3 weeks earlier) will make traveling life around United Kingdom (Scotland, England and Wales) easy for you. It’s cheap but it’ll take longer period of time to reach your destination.
Trains are fun to be in. It’s fast! But sometimes they tend to be really expensive, especially if you book pretty late. If you need a cheaper train ride, you must book a month ahead of time or you can book a night train. But being night, you won’t see much beautiful sceneries, just dark clouds or city lights.
I advice taking coaches or trains because train and bus stations are near or in town centers; you won’t get lost easily.
Wherever you want to go, you can book your coach or train ride at the following websites;
http://www.nationalexpress.com/
National Express has offers and promotions; you can always subscribe on their updates. Megabus always offer cheap bus tickets among most coach service.
There are ways to get even cheaper prices!
- You can get cheaper prices with NUS (National Union of Students) card. NUS card is not only for cheaper rides, but also for shopping. Flash our card at selected outlets and you can get discounts. You can also have discount coupons online (You have to print them though; they need the bar code on the coupons). You can get your NUS card for £10 per year. It’s really worth it. For more information, please go to http://www.nus.org.uk/
- Save 1/3 off your rail fares around Britain with Railcard for just £26 (valid for a year only) for those 16 to 25 years old. For more information, please go to http://www.railcard.co.uk/
- For North East travel only, as long as you’re 22 years old or below, do register and you can get your FREE travel card at www.simplygo.com and you’re eligible for discounted fares and travel around the North East of England.
For those who plan to fly around EUROPE, fear not. There’s Easyjet! Easyjet makes flying so cheap, that you wish you can fly every week or so, if only you have the time. Please, studies are really important, so don’t be tempted. As usual, the earlier you book, the cheaper. You can fly to places like Rome, Paris, Italy, and the list goes on and on. What’s best, you can also book your hotel though their website and collect points. Enough points will give you free offers and flights. For more information please go to http://www.easyjet.com/
However, airports are not always situated very near to the town. If you were to fly to London before you go elsewhere, you can book your coach ride at http://www.easybus.com/ and fares can be as low as £1 only, if you book really early. They’ll take you from Gatwick, Stansted or Luton airport and drop you off at min stations in London, such as Victoria, Golders Green, Baker Street or Kings Cross (they shot Bourne there I think).
In conclusion, do remember tips to travel;
- Book early. The earlier the better.
- You can always Google cheap fairs and hotels. Offers of museums or interesting play parks (Wax museum etc) can be found online.
- Plan before you journey, eg: places you want to visit, so that you won’t waste too much time idling.
- Book your hotel at places where it’s strategic and near a railway station, it’ll make going around much easier.
- Remember, if you do get lost, smile and politely ask the people around. They know you’re a tourist and they will be willing to point you out the directions.
- Be careful. Keep your things, especially your passport to yourself. Pickpockets and conmen are unavoidable.
Hope you’ll find this useful! Cheers~
